Steam Blanket Test Results

For this test we set a temperature sensor 30" below the surface of the test area, which was then covered with 6" thick ice blocks. The blankets were laid over the ice.

1. 9:00 am
Temperature below ground (TBG) 20.9° C.
2. 9:10 am
Test begins.
3. 9:15 am
Started thawing ice.
4. 9:26 am
Ice was completely dissolved.
5. 9:31 am
Temperature under blanket 167° F.
6. 9:47 am
TBG 20.9° C.
8. 10:10 am
TBG 20.9° C.
10. 10:27 am
TBG 20.9° C.
11. 10:32 am
TBG 20.9° C.
12. 10:48 am
TBG 20.9° C.
14. 11:06 am
Took core sample TBG up to and including 18". The TBG was 35° C.
15. 11:21 am
Test complete.

This data demonstrates that after one hour and twenty minutes of blanket operation, 6" of ice were melted. The temperature below ground, measured to 18", increased by 14° C.

The temperature at 30" below the ground continued to rise for three hours after the test was completed and reached 22.9° C. This increase of 2° C over the test area was measured after the steam blankets were removed.

Steam Blanket Operational Guidelines

  1. It is recommended that a ball valve be used to control steam pressure.
  2. Dry steam pressure may vary from steam line to steam line; therefore it is imperative that the blanket be pressured up slowly.
  3. Once blanket is inflated, there is no need to increase steam pressure.
  4. The steam blanket requires minimal pressure to function effectively.

Failure to pressure up slowly may cause blanket to malfunction and possibly cause injury.

Safe Operating Pressures

1. Wet steam: 80 to 90 P.S.I.

2. Dry steam: 20 to 30 P.S.I.

Cautions

Improper use can result in injury

  1. Do not exceed 150 P.S.I.
  2. Do not insert foreign objects in pressure release holes.
  3. Always use handles to move when in operation.
  4. Do not put body parts under blanket when in operation.
  5. Do not place on sharp objects.
  6. Do not drop objects on blanket.

Failure to follow these instructions could result in injury and void warranty. Warranty will also be void if damage is due to excessive chemical usage in boiler. Any other defects will be assessed to determine whether misuse or manufacturer defect has occurred. Any blanket defects due to manufacturer error will be fixed or replaced promptly. These instructions should be posted where everyone can see them.
